Top economic officials from the US & China to face off in Kuala Lumpur amid heightened trade tensions. Agenda includes averting escalation of trade war and ensuring a Trump-Xi meet next week in South Korea on sidelines of APEC Summit. Attempts of normalisations paced up after Trump threatened new 100% tariffs on Chinese goods from November 1, in retaliation to Beijing’s widely expanded export controls on rare earth magnets and critical minerals. In recent action, Washington expanded its export blacklist to covers thousands more Chinese firms. This disrupted the 90-day trade truce crafted by US’ Bessent & Greer with China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng in May 2025. Trump-Xi meet at APEC Summit in South Korea is expected to bring relief in tariffs and technology controls. While Beijing controls exports of rare earth elements, Washington checks supply of high end chips to China. Trump admin also considering plan to curb dizzying array of software-powered exports to China, from laptops to jet engines, Reuters reported. Additionally, this could lead US side to press Beijing to resume buying American soybeans after China bought none in September. China committed to increases in purchases of US farm products, manufactured goods, energy & services in 2020 deal, but targets hasn’t met. While the tour accompanied by high hopes and some silver linings, expert are still skeptical of the success of the talks. “I'm not sure Chinese can agree to that, it's primary leverage that they have” said Lipsky, economic expert in Washington. “If there's no deal, then everyone will need to prepare for things to get much nastier”, said China economics expert, Kennedy.
