Note: This month had a similar vibe to May 2019, super busy (hence the 40-minute runtime) but very much worth it. Conventions, a trip up north to see my parents, a coronation, finding a stack of old tapes, and a chance run-in with a primary-school friend that turned into drinks. After waiting a while, I finally did a proper lecture at my old Media College and connected with the film students in a way that felt genuinely enlightening. Money was tight for most of the month, we had little until the last third, but we made do and enjoyed what we could. Staying at Dad’s gave us privacy and the freedom to explore a bit. All in all, a great month: some lows, but plenty of highs. CHAPTERS: 00:08 | 1st May: Helped Claire film allotment update videos for her YouTube channel. 00:34 | 2nd May: An old stick-figure animation channel I watched as a kid got a bigger budget, nice to see it fleshed out. 01:07 | 3rd May: Spotted Granny and Grandad on BBC News B-Roll. 01:13 | 4th May: Went out to vote in local elections. 01:21 | 5th May: Weird morning of deja vu, then headed north. Coach shuffled our seats but we got refunded when they realised. 02:25 | 6th May: Coronation decorations everywhere, then visited a childhood stream where I used to play Pooh-Sticks with Nana. Felt grounding despite fuzzy memories. 06:03 | 7th May: Proper disconnect and relaxation. Saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, visited Mum, soaked up coronation celebrations, grabbed Chinese, then to Dad’s. 10:12 | 8th May: Rainy early-summer day, warm wind and petrichor. Found a 2004 class photo and more tapes, hence some 2006–2008 footage. Tried an air-fryer for the first time. 11:44 | 9th May: Recreated an old bus-stop video from 2010, then had a lo-fi day in town. Money was low, but we made the most of it — ice cream, nicknack shops, good company. 14:50 | 10th May: Made spicy chicken rice for dinner. Felt right. 14:56 | 11th May: Returned to my old college to give a talk. It was good to be back, to speak openly about what I’ve been up to, and to see students engaged. 19:19 | 13th May: Back at Dad’s, indulged in simple pleasures: picnic sandwiches, a walk, some nature. 20:24 | 14th May: Impromptu visit to Mum led to a surprise meet with my old school friend “Jono.” He invited us for drinks later; I kept his face off camera at the time for safety, he’s since said it’s fine as long as I don’t name or detail his deployment. 22:50 | 15th May: Day out in York. Queued for Ghost Merchants, bought handcrafted ghosts, enjoyed the weather. Dad returned from Corfu and taught us Blackjack. 27:47 | 16th May: Dad made fried chicken and bacon sandwiches. Very special. 27:51 | 17th May: Filmed puppet videos with Dad, then met Jono at the pub. His parents ferried us; we ate, played the Monopoly Card Game, and laughed. 28:43 | 18th May: Put googly eyes on the washing machine, Dad showed a weird Snapchat filter, then went to Richmond for beef pie at the Drummer Boy Café. 29:08 | 19th May: Brief time-slip encounter with myself, then travelled back south. 30:17 | 21st May: Quex Park Comic Con — hot dogs, live music from The Mixtape Collective, and sibling lightsabre fighting. 32:30 | 22nd May: Summer haircuts at Nick’s. Saved a red butterfly that lingered on the glass outside. 33:15 | 23rd May: Mario Kart Wii with Emily and George. 33:58 | 27th May: Overstimulating but fun MCM Comic Con. Mark took Jon and others onstage to talk Unwelcome (2023) and VFX; he also did a Forbidden Planet signing. 36:04 | 29th May: Calming BBQ at home with S’mores. 36:40 | 30th May: Stayed in London overnight before an early flight. Took the Terminal Shuttle for the first time, found the Premier Inn, ordered pizza, collapsed into bed. 37:52 | 31st May: 3AM wake-up for a 6:55AM flight. Smooth journey to Alicante; Granny and Grandad picked us up, fed us Tostadas and a roast, and we ended the month watching Stardust, the first of many films for the June diary.
