Stripped skid plate bolts are a common problem on older Jeep TJs — especially when rust, previous repairs, or broken bolts are involved. On my 1999 Jeep TJ, the factory frame threads for the transfer case skid plate were completely shot, making it impossible to reinstall the skid plate securely. In this video, I show how I used nutserts (rivet nuts) to permanently repair the frame and reinstall the skid plate without welding. The nutsert kit I used includes a simple installation tool made from a bolt, nut, and bearing that compresses the insert into the frame like a rivet. I also deal with an old, failed repair from a previous owner — grinding out a damaged nutsert that was holding a broken bolt — before installing new inserts and bolting everything back together properly.
