Semper now provides electric as well as acoustic recording options. Musician’s Note: 78 Special are a recently formed string band made up of some of Austin’s finest old time musicians. Members are Guy Forsyth, well known songster and instrumentalist, Will Webster, old time musician extraordinaire on a variety of strings and pipes Westen Borghesi, holding down the low end on cello and jug in addition to washboard Engineer’s Note: This was the first session done with the improved process. At first there were many difficulties: speed fluctuation, uneven grooves, noisy grooves, damaged blanks, blasting bass and distortion. After much trial and error (and patience from the band) we ended up getting some really amazing results. This band will be returning for future sessions with us and we are delighted with the results thus far. As such, the sound may be crude and unbalanced. That said, I am pretty happy with how this is sounding already. I have been experimenting with different cutting styli and this one really gets a nice groove noise to cut ratio. I’ve still got a long way to go but this recording has both greater clarity and greater volume compared to my previous experiments. But it will continue to improve.
