My 8.1 swap is officially complete, and it's time to see if was all worth it, and measure how much power we have gained (or lost) by swapping from a 5.3 to an 8.1. On paper, the 8.1 is rated at 340hp and 455lb.ft. of torque, but how much of that is making it down to the ground? On most 2500HD trucks, there is an Allison 1000 automatic transmission and an AAM 11.5" axle, both of which suck up a lot of power. On UglyTruck, its running a 4L80 and 8.5" 10-bolt axle, which are both a lot lighter and absorb a lot less horsepower. All I know, is the big block 496 engine is a blast to drive, is smooth as silk, and hopefully is a solid foundation for some power adders to come.
