Dr. Sajjan Rajpurohit, a Medical Oncologist, highlights that the most common cancers among women differ significantly between rural and urban populations. In rural areas, the most common cancer remains Cervical Cancer. It is followed by Colorectal, Breast, and Uterine/Ovarian cancers. The high incidence of Cervical Cancer is due to disparities in socioeconomic factors, leading to lower awareness and limited access to screening or the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. This is a viral infection-driven cancer that is largely preventable. In affluent, urban areas, the landscape flips. The most common cancer is Breast Cancer, followed by Uterine and Ovarian cancers. This pattern is attributed to the prevalence of factors associated with higher socioeconomic status, such as obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and hormonal influences (like later age of childbirth), which drive these hormonally-driven cancers. Research confirms this trend, showing that while breast cancer incidence can be up to 9% higher in urban areas compared to rural areas, cervical cancer incidence rates are significantly lower in urban centers where screening access is better. (Source: Studies on cancer registry data in India, published in PMC and ICMR reports). Recognizing these distinct risk factors is paramount for designing effective public health and screening strategies across the country. Awareness saves lives.
