Deafness in children which is either from birth they can even get a sensorineural or a nerve deafness later in following infections or trauma. Sensorineural deafness for so many years have been tackled with hearing aids. However there is a large group of children who do not benefit with hearing aids. Now we can offer them a mimic ear or a cochlear implant. What is a cochlear implant? Cochlear implant is a technology where an electrode is inserted to the child’s inner ear so that they can perceive sound. Eventually the sounds are transmitted to the brain where it can understand the speech. With this technology it is a blessing for the children so that they can be mainstreamed into the society with the hearing aid cochlear implant has been a boon for sensorineural deaf children especially the profound ones who do not benefit with hearing aids. No more should these children be going to a deaf schools or special schools. Here are our hospital we have a state of art operation theatres, all the expertise in terms of ENT surgeon, radiology colleagues who help me to diagnose the radiology part of the nerve, along with the paediatric teams and the anaesthetists. When a child comes for cochlear implantation we not only offer the surgery, we also offer the post implantation rehabilitation, which is taken care of our well-equipped audiology and speech therapy unit.
