Join us this week as we take on the rugged beauty of the Santa Rosa Mountains in Riverside County, California, aiming for the elusive Toro Peak, the highest point in the range at over 8,000 ft! We start our journey at the intersection of Highway 74 and the Santa Rosa Truck Trail, navigating scenic shelf roads, dramatic switchbacks, and cloud-covered vistas. Along the way, we encounter: Utility trucks blazing ahead, wildlife sightings (hello, squirrels and roadrunners!), oak groves, manzanita, unexpected water sources, hidden campgrounds with fire rings and picnic tables, rain, mud pits, and rocky terrain, and stunning views of Palm Springs, Borrego Springs, and the Salton Sea. Despite the gate blocking access to Toro Peak itself (due to private ownership and antenna installations), we explore nearby peaks and offshoot trails, capturing breathtaking views and sharing candid moments from the trail. #OffRoadAdventure #SantaRosaMountains #ToroPeak #Overlanding #CaliforniaTrails #NatureExploration #TrailLife #4x4offroad Trailhead: 33.56777, -116.51188 Beginner trail rating: 3/10 Low point: Four thousand feet High point: Eight thousand feet Juristiction: San Bernardino National Forest Type of vehicle: High clearance AWD Tires: Street tire ok Distance traveled: 20 miles out and back Total time: 4 hours Challenge: Passing traffic Dangers: Death drops, rock slides Things to do: Camping, hiking Things to see: Spectacular 360 views When to go: Year round, winters can have snow and summers fire Chance of pinstripes: 1/10 Chapters: 0.00 Intro 1:00 Trailhead 2:04 Twisties 9:30 Mud pit 11:00 Switchbacks 16:00 A view to a crack 18:00 Oak grove and a creek crossing 20:00 Canyon views and washouts 27:00 A much needed break 29:00 Trees and rocks 31:20 Santa Rosa Spring 38:00 Shelf road 41:00 Santa Rosa peak campground 50:00 Burnt cabin 54:00 Stump Springs campground 56:45 Toro camp loop 58:00 Climb to the peak 1:02:00 Gawking around 1:07:00 Outro
