Filmed on the evening of 1 June 2025, this recording presents a complete traditional Balinese dance performance at the Ubud Water Palace, also known as Pura Taman Saraswati — one of Ubud’s most distinguished cultural stages. Captured in real time over forty-one minutes, the programme features three classical dances performed to the live accompaniment of a Gamelan orchestra: • Pendet — a graceful ceremonial dance of welcome • Legong — an elegant court dance once reserved for royal circles • Topeng Tua — a contemplative masked performance portraying the passage of age and wisdom Admission to the performance is customarily priced at IDR 100,000 per person, with tickets available at the entrance or nearby counters. There is no narration, nor are artificial sound effects employed — only the authentic resonance of the stage, the audience, and the refined cadence of the Gamelan ensemble. For many visitors, this setting offers one of the most genuine introductions to Balinese heritage and the island’s evening cultural traditions. Detailed Dance Notes Pendet – The Dance of Welcome Originally performed within temple rituals, Pendet served as a sacred offering to greet deities believed to descend upon the shrine. The choreography embodies blessing, purity, and hospitality, with dancers scattering flower petals in a gesture of reverence toward both the divine and the audience. Legong – The Classical Court Dance Legong traces its lineage to Balinese royal courts and is renowned for its precision and discipline. Characterised by intricate eye and finger movements, elaborate golden attire, and synchronised formations, it remains one of Bali’s most technically demanding and aesthetically refined dances. Topeng Tua – The Old Man Mask Dance Emerging from the classical Topeng theatrical tradition influenced by the Majapahit era, this performance depicts an elderly figure rich in memory, humour, and introspection. Movements alternate between gentle tremors and sudden vitality, reflecting the Balinese contemplation of life’s stages and human imperfection. Additional Notes The Ubud Water Palace is celebrated for its lotus ponds, ornate stone carvings, and open-air evening performances. Shows typically commence at approximately 7:30 PM, with seating arranged before the illuminated water gardens. Early arrival is generally advisable for optimal viewing.
