Opus 629 - September 2011 Benedict Kloeckner, cello. Howard Blake, piano. Genuin records/SWR. Howard was talking to Colin Lawson as he was about to be appointed Principal of The Royal College of Music. Colin’s instrument was basset-clarinet and he bemoaned the lack of repertoire for the instrument. Howard volunteered and was promptly commissioned to write something to celebrate Colin’s appointment. He found the poem ‘The Enchantment of Venus’ as a scenario and the work was duly premiered by Colin and Howard at Vernon Ellis's Concert Room, 49 Queen's Gate Terrace, London, on November 1st 2006. However other instrumentalists wanted to play the piece and Benedict Kloeckner premiered this arrangement for cello and piano at his chamber music festival in Coblenz. 'The goddess Athena invents the Aulos and plays it at banquets of the gods. Finding it distorts her features she discards it and pronounces a curse against whoever picks it up. The satyr Marsyas comes upon it and wins such esteem that the the lyre-playing Apollo is furious and challenges him to a duel. Despite his wonderful playing Marsyas is tricked and tragically condemned to the underworld; but he sets himself the task of creating an instrument of such range and beauty that he can re-challenge Apollo and triumph. He mounts the steps of Olympus, plays brillliantly and seductively and Venus is enchanted.'
