Madagascar is a platform video game based on the animated film of the same name by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, produced by DreamWorks. The game was released on May 24, 2005 in North America and on June 30, 2005 in Europe. The GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox versions were developed by Toys for Bob. The Microsoft Windows version was developed by Beenox and the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance versions were developed by Vicarious Visions. All versions of the game were published by Activision. Madagascar: Operation Penguin was the next Madagascar video game to be released on the Game Boy Advance. Madagascar is mainly a platformer with stealth, puzzle, and combat elements. The player mainly controls Marty the zebra, while in other levels the player can also control Gloria the hippo, Melman the giraffe, and Alex the lion. Each character in the game has his or her own ability. To gain said abilities, the player must first find three cards, known as power cards, to gain them. Skipper the penguin and Mort the mouse lemur are also playable in some levels. Outside of platforming, there are also challenges including using a crane to eliminate the crew of a ship, shooting darts at a hunter, protecting mushrooms from cockroaches, escorting lemurs to safety, flinging explosive durians at worms, as well as defeating crocodile martial artists. Throughout the levels, players can collect Monkey Coins, which can be cashed in at the Zoovenir Shop, an in-game store, for character accessories, mini-games, extra health, and cheats. The player can also collect healing tikis, which when ten of them are collected, grants the player an extra life. The player can also earn bonus coins by performing additional tasks, including jumping through a number of rings as Alex and destroying a number of vehicles in New York City as Gloria. Marty the zebra, Alex the lion, Gloria the Hippopotamus, and Melman the Giraffe live in the Central Park Zoo in New York. On Marty's tenth birthday, Marty starts to have doubts that the zoo is where he belongs and finds that life in the zoo is boring. Marty decides to save Alex, he asks Mort the fastest way to get to Alex. Mort at first suggested Toad road then Marty asked if it will take him to Alex quickly which Mort said that it's a longer road and has a lot of toads. Mort then said "Then there's the Apple Passage. If you like apples" then Marty is visibly upset and said "I don't care about Apples or Toads! I'm looking for Alex! My friend, the lion. I need you to focus, Mort. Is there a faster route?". Mort then look around and after a short silence, he said "Well...if you want to get there as quickly as possible. I'm afraid your only chance is to take the Road With No Chance of Survival Trail" which Marty sarcastically said "Now that sounds promising". Mort said that the name is misleading as it is actually a pathway and free of toads and apple which Marty then agree to take the road. In the road, Mort said "If you want to get to Alex in time, you really have to keep a tight schedule. Get to the checkpoint as quickly as possible or I uh...won't be able to be there to meet you" which Marty look at him and asks what he meant by that. Mort then said "No...the other creatures in this jungle plan to eat smaller creature that don't move at faster pace". If you try to intentionally run out of time, Mort is implied to be eaten by two giant spiders as you can see from the Game Over cutscene of Mort approached by two spiders. Once you get to the checkpoint, Marty heads to the next area and meet Wilbur the warthog. Here, he asked the duo to get fruits from the tall trees and who can get them? Mort is small enough so he ended up jumping on the mushrooms to collect all the fallen fruits (Avoid Spider if you don't want Mort to get eaten. Durian will make you lose some fruits you have gathered so be careful). After gathering enough fruits, Wilbur move the giant rock with a hip slam much to Marty disappointment because all that hard work...only for giving Wilbur enough motivation to move a rock. The next area is stream and Mort warn Marty to avoid the long hole sled on the way. At the end, another cave-in and the duo enter. You don't have to be in a hurry in this cave here, just take your time but the white crocodile took Mort and challenge Marty on the next stream. Once you beat him, he return Mort and left. Marty finally let himself taken by water vortex that will take him to where Alex is
