Join master djembefola Sidiki Dembélé and the powerful ensemble Percussion d'Abobo for a vibrant showcase of the Yogoro Rhythm during the 2023 course in Abobo, Abidjan. This immersive training brings together young musicians in a celebration of rhythm, culture, and community. Yogoro is a unique traditional rhythm performed annually in Côte d'Ivoire. While it’s not religious, Yogoro is usually played from mid- to late Ramadan, marking a festive and communal celebration. Young men dress in colourful, eccentric costumes, painting their faces with kaolin, and travel from house to house — much like Halloween — receiving small gifts of money, sweets, and food. The tradition is deeply rooted in oral storytelling and cultural performance, where the songs and rhythms evolve in real time, reflecting shifts in mood and message. This makes Yogoro a living tradition — fluid, participatory, and joyful.
