Loss of the interdental papilla might be a small defect but when it is there, your patient is concerned and might not smile as a result. Can the papilla return? Why is the “5 millimeter rule” a fallacy? What can be done to facilitate ideal healing when it is injured? Just what is the current state of the art in oral plastic surgery when it comes to the lost interdental papilla? Dr. Peter Nordland has recently published several clinical articles on this topic including his publication in The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. When the interdental papilla is lost or deficient, there are ways to correct the defect with surgery, orthodontic tooth movement and restorative dentistry. This presentation will focus primarily on newly developed surgical techniques to augment this small area.
