Tigard Ranger Jordan is back, and this time he’s joined by Jennifer Sandvig, General Manager with Geese Guys, to talk about how the City of Tigard humanely manages geese at Summerlake Park. Jennifer joined Geese Guys in 2019 and holds a degree in Animal Sciences, with a focus on animal behavior and bioethics. She also brings more than 13 years of experience teaching both animals and people how to build positive relationships. In this video, Ranger Jordan and Jennifer explain the methods used to manage the geese population at Summerlake Park, including the use of trained border collies. These working dogs act as natural predators, encouraging geese to move along without harming them. An experienced handler and border collie patrol the park several afternoons each week, especially in the spring. These dogs are official working animals and are the only dogs allowed off leash in the park. You’ll also learn about seasonal egg depredation efforts, where nests are located and eggs are removed in a humane, regulated way to prevent overpopulation while still allowing some geese to remain in the area. These methods are designed to protect the health and safety of people and wildlife, reduce flock size and frequency, and maintain a healthy balance in the park. All practices follow guidelines from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. When you see the dogs and handlers at the park, please give them space so they can do their job safely and effectively. Learn more: https://www.tigard-or.gov/community-s...
