Wide of Volkswagen plant STORY: Thousands of people marched through Brussels on Saturday to protest against carmaker Volkswagen AG's decision to cut 3,500 jobs at its assembly plant in the city. Some 25-thousand took part in the three-hour march that stretched over several kilometres, organisers said. Police put the number at 15-thousand. The protesters, dressed in red and white, green or blue, the colours of the country's main trade unions, waved flags and banners saying, "Do not touch my job", "Don't make my father unemployed". Another sign said "Victims of Wolfsburg", in reference to the German city where the carmaker is based, and referring to Volkswagen AG's announcement that it would halt production of its Golf model at the Belgian plant and shift assembly to two German plants. The move is part of a restructuring that could cost a further 20-thousand jobs across Europe. An official from the CSC Christian union at Volkswagen, Pascal Van Cauwenberge, who was taking part in the demonstration, said he didn't think the wounds from this announcement would ever heal. But he added, "we will have to try to save as many jobs as possible and to try to keep as many people employed with Volkswagen." Some workers on the march were frustrated because they still had not been told who would be losing their jobs.
