Let’s explore a Japanese Seaplane Tender serving during the World War II, The "Akitsushima Ship Wreck" which sunk in Coron Palawan Philippines on the 20th of September 1944 bombed by the US Task Force (TF 38). It is also know as "The Only True Warship among the wrecks in Coron". It is probably the most famous of the Coron Bay Shipwrecks, known for its depth and occasional strong currents this dive is recommended only for experienced Advanced Divers with at least 25 logged dives. #wreckdiving #scubadiving #worldwarII AKITSUSHIMA "Sea Plane Tender" IJNS Imperial Japanese Navy 118 meters long | 16 meters wide | Sunk Port Side 290 degrees Location: Coron Bay, Busuanga (Philippines) Dive Depth: Deep Diving Current: Medium Status: Capsized Maximum Depth: 36 meters (118 feet) Shallowest Part: 20-22 meters (the deck area) Deep Water Entry: 1 reference line Recommended Certification Level: Advanced Open Water & Wreck Diver for Penetration WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: Machinery of the crane Machine gun (25mm; two 12, 7cm twin-gun turrets, anti air craft gun- AA Gun) Battleship gearings (live ammunition and radio gas masks) Munitions (material fired, scattered, dropped or detonated from any weapon) Chronometer that had been lying there undisturbed for the past 65 years Engine room (engine fuel, machinery and 4 big diesel engines) Control room (panels covered in gauges and dials) -Radio Tower Crane used to carry the seaplanes (seaplane tender; used to lower the flying boat into the water) (Unfortunately, most of the valuable material like the steam engine and the 12, 7cm twin guns were salvaged a long time ago.) MARINE LIFE The starboard side has a good marine life, you can spot some Glassfish, Barracudas, Tunas, Batfishes & occasional groupers (but not that much). A lot of black corals and sponges growing on it. THE STORY OF HER SINKING The Akitsushima vessel had suffered from minor damage inflicted by U.S. air attacks It was hit at the stern which made a huge crack that almost split the ship apart (destroying the bridge section) and caused her to capsize and sink rapidly . Unfortunately the seaplane has never been found and it is assumed that it took off before the sinking. It is believed that after the war, it was salvaged by the Japanese.
