This will be a fun one! Today, we're comparing two classic circuits from two legendary British amp manufacturers - Marshall and Orange. The Orange Retro 50 is a 'greatest hits' of the 1970s 'Pics Only' circuits (such as in the OR120) but at a slightly lower wattage. My Vajra (made by Mark Durham of 18-Watt Forum fame) is a like-for-like clone of a mid-1960s Plexi JTM45. Both amplifiers are handwired point-to-point using the absolute best components out there....premium quality vintage reissue capacitors, custom transformers, etc. They're both absolutely zero-comprise in chasing their respective classic sounds using the best gear out there. I've chosen to run the heads into different cabinets, loaded with different speakers. This is because - to me - we're looking at 'legendary tones' more so than just legendary amps...and the speakers these old circuits were commonly paired with were absolutely part of the overall package. I'll be cranking the JTM45 with no attenuator, and keeping the master volume on the Orange wide open....so we're dealing with serious decibels today and really pushing some air. Wait until the neighbours get wind of what I have planned for Part 2....!!! What do you think? Which amp was your favourite? And with which guitar? Comment below!
