Empress Hut | Climbing the Mt Hicks Ice Fields

At 2472m, Empress Hut is New Zealand’s highest alpine hut. As commercial helicopter access is prohibited, Empress Hut is accessible only by foot. The walk is not to be underestimated. But for the few that make this pilgrimage, you are rewarded with perhaps the most serene alpine playground in New Zealand. *Correction at the 2.08min: there were 17 of us staying that night. It was the most occupancy in entire 29 year life of this hut! We all did our part to make the small 12-bed hut fit us all, and many new friendships were made. On Labour Weekend 2023, Jim and I set out with the objective to climb the right hand ice fields of Mt Hicks, Grade 4+. We headed in the day before labour weekend with a great high after a big southerly. The conditions were cold, clear, and perfect for ice climbing. We called it a day at the top of the ice shield on the summit ridge, and I pledged to return when I was confident enough to lead the technical sections.
