At the ongoing 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, an event organized (02/10/2025) by the India-based NGO, Sindhi Adhikar Manch, put a spotlight on the constitutional and legal safeguards for minorities and Dalits in India. The event, titled "Rights of Dalits and Minorities," began by invoking the founding principles of modern India. The President of the organization, Gobind Gurbani, opened with quotes from Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the importance of protecting minority communities in a democracy. The presentation detailed the extensive framework of constitutional rights designed to ensure equality and freedom. This includes the right to equality, the prohibition of discrimination, and the freedom to manage religious and educational institutions. President of Sindhi Adhikar Manch Mr Gobind Gurbani, said: "The strength of a democracy is measured not by how it treats the majority, but by how it protects its minorities... In India, the Muslim population has grown from 9.8% at partition to over 15% today, and the nation has seen four Muslim Presidents." On the rights of Dalits, social activist Ms. Divya Adwani outlined the government's three-pronged strategy: legal protection through acts like the Prevention of Atrocities Act, positive discrimination through reservations in education and jobs, and development initiatives for entrepreneurship and social welfare. The event concluded with a short film on the Hindu Sindhi community, highlighting their journey after the 1947 partition. It showcased how, through hard work and supported by the broader community, they have become partners in national building, contributing significantly to the economy and social fabric of India. he event served as a platform to present India's constitutional approach to safeguarding its diverse communities, framing it as a continuous effort rooted in the vision of the nation's founders.
