I am sharing some ideas on how to use the deluge's arpeggiator upon request, the on screen text as pure text: Hi, today I’ll share some ideas on how to use the deluge’s arpeggiator Let’s start with the simplest of arpeggios. 1 note, 1 octave. boring. so I’m gonna work on the patch first for a second changing the wave to a sawtooth and a bit of LPF now i randomize a bunch of stuff. namely filter cutoff point, volume, decay and pan. this sort of thing works really nicely with arpeggios I think while the arpeggio is repetitive the timbre offers variation reverb and delay to round things off good. all set now. gonna add more notes to the arpeggio now instead of doing this I sometimes just punch in all the notes and mute the ones I don’t need at the moment this is cool for performing. i hit the mute pad and the note is latched. very useful for example when I’m just figuring out what I like I’m gonna try this with the arpeggio going up and down thanks to the arpeggio it’s no big deal if I’m not perfectly in time. sometimes even sounds nice what i dislike most about arpeggios is that they just go on forever and never pause the simplest way to avoid that is by modulating volume with an lfo decreasing lfo speed sine shape works better for this than triangle it has more of a “shelf” on top and bottom the effect isn’t strong enough. I apply lfo1 to osc1 volume as well it’s dropping out completely. nice. Let’s hear it with the chord It fades in and out nicely now try different lfo shapes and rates, synced and free running. I add stepped automation to make things more interesting in this case to the portamento values once I entered all the automation values I get rid of the notes the automation stays in place this way I can use stepped automation even though the arpeggio notes are all sustained increasing the octave range further I turn off the sync for the rate. now I can modulate it with lfo 1 for constantly changing speed I learn the modulation amount to a gold knob now I have better control over it back to my initial arpeggio another a bit weird way to interrupt the arpeggio is as follows I pick a very high note. one I’m not gonna need. I punch in some notes with velocity all the way down now we don’t hear the note, but it effectively masks the others resulting in a kind of gating how exactly this behaves I couldn’t wrap my head around but it gives some nice (unpredictable) results I shorten the row of this note so it goes out of phase with the arpeggio more octaves back to my original arpeggio with some of the notes muted now I want it to gradually fade out when the notes go higher up for this I’m modulating the LPF cutoff with the note mod source I dial it all the way in the negative direction the higher the notes, the more they get filtered at some point the filter closes all the way and the notes are silent It’s like a low pass filter for notes I reduced the randomness of the patch so you can hear the effect of the negative key tracking better an it gives smoother results at faster arp speeds by adjusting the amout of note mod I can move the cutoff point of course I can also go positive for “normal” key tracking my favourite use of the arpeggiator is not for arpeggios. I like to use it to spice up melodies here’s “twinkle, twinkle, little star” not all that exciting as is so I add some harmony notes to the melody now I set the arpeggiator to random this way the deluge randomly finds its own path through this melody each time there are two notes one gets picked randomly same “gating” trick as before I love this type of randomness we can clearly hear the general shape of the melody but it’s never twice the same but it’s never twice the same letting a little more melody through, hopefully… shortening the row so it doesnt repeat in phase with the melody adding a bass also using the arpeggiator randomizing the octave adding an alternate first bass notethis time I’m using probability to have the deluge pick one this time I’m using probability to have the deluge pick one I’m adding more higher notes to the “twinkle, twinkle” thing but with lesser probability switching voice mode to poly increasing release time. nice.
