Experiencing the Koli way of life with Authenticook

A seafaring community, the kolis are known to have settled in Mumbai in the 12th century AD. Their villages or 'Koliwada' as they are called, are by the sea and in different pockets of the city. One such village or 'koliwada' is that of Versova in North Mumbai. The name Versova was derived from the local word “Visava” which meant “to rest” and this was the port where ships docked for a break. Since then, the community has continued with their profession of catching and selling fish. Despite being in one of the toughest professions in India, the Kolis make for brilliant ambassadors of Bobby McFerrin’s song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”!
