An amylase test is done to check the level of amylase enzyme in the blood. Amylase is normally produced by the salivary glands and pancreas. It then breaks down carbohydrates and starch into sugars. These sugars are then converted into glucose, which helps the body function properly. This test is done to check for conditions that affect the pancreas and salivary glands, causing changes in the levels of amylase enzyme. There is usually a small amount of amylase in the blood and urine, but this level can increase due to an injury, blockage or inflammation in the pancreas or salivary glands. A short-term high ammonia level can also be seen in the blood, but it may last a little longer in the urine. Certain medicines, infections, alcohol, cancer and other pancreatic problems can also increase amylase levels. This test is also known as a serum amylase test. Why is an amylase test done? The amylase test is most commonly done for: Acute pancreatitis (sudden inflammation of the pancreas) Chronic pancreatitis (long-standing inflammation of the pancreas) Pancreatitis Ruptured ectopic pregnancy Stomach ulcers Gallstones Blockage of the pancreatic duct Cystic fibrosis (a genetic disease in which thick mucus blocks the lungs and digestive tract.)
