Focus on the "Blonde on Blonde" Blur

Newly installed at the Bob Dylan Center: Richard Prince’s monumental 10' x 10' rendering of Jerry Schatzberg’s famously blurry 1966 photograph of Dylan, familiar from the "Blonde on Blonde" album cover, is made uncanny through enlargement and distortion yet remains immediately identifiable. Prince’s controversial practice of appropriating well-known images of Dylan, Sid Vicious, the Marlboro Man and other pop-culture icons—directly replicating or playfully manipulating his source material—raises provocative questions of authorship and ownership. Schatzberg fully approves of Prince’s reimagining of his work, and Dylan’s visage endures, as riveting and inscrutable as ever.
