Glassblowing: 200 GLASS DRAGONS for the Kugler Color Chart!

I just completed the largest project of my career! About a year ago I started to work with Kugler Colors, a company that hand-crafts a wide range of colored glass based on recipes passed on for generations. Our plan: to design a brand new color chart. A glass color chart is a reference that shows examples of what each glass color looks like. It is a resource for glass artists to help them choose the correct colors for their projects. Glass color comes in many forms, including dense "bar," chunks of small color called frit, and powder. The look of the color can change based on how much is used, and how it is applied to the glass. The most common type of color chart shows blown bar color. As a sculptor, I always wished for a resource that showed more than one way that the color can be used. Our goal was to create a chart that demonstrated the bar color encased and blown, as well as powder color applied to the surface of the glass and sculpted. The base of each sculpture uses encased, blown bar color. The dragon heads use powder color on the surface. Additionally, I used pure color bar as accents of small horns and teeth, and used a propane-heavy flame to reduce the color on the snout of each dragon. We chose the image of the dragon because, like the glass community, dragon imagery can be found in cultures around the world, and its symbolism brings to mind good luck, fortune, wisdom and strength - things we wish for all artists out there! I created one dragon sculpture for each of the colors on the poster (nearly 200 of them!). It was important to me that each dragon head was a similar size and style, but each completely unique. I hope that this color chart will give you a good idea of the potential of each color for both blowers and sculptors. Each dragon was made using Kugler Clear Cullet, which melts beautifully and cleanly, with a long working time for sculpting. The glass was, of course, melted in my Mobile Glassblowing Studios Dragon Furnace, which helped keep the project cost manageable and energy-efficient.
