#deepavali #Diwali #jalapooja Before filling the main water storage vessel (bhana), a pooja is performed to the well in the house courtyard. For those without a well, a tap is garlanded and a pooja is performed to it. Rituals: Kumkum is applied to the well wall, and akshath (rice grains) and a little coconut oil are put on the pulley (Gado). A lighted agarbathi (incense stick) is waved as arathi. Sound: Young children at home bang a steel plate with a steel spatula, an act called 'vatte vajjuche', or use a jaganta (a type of instrument used in temples and homes during pooja). Offerings: Sugar or a sweet is distributed afterward. Drawing Water: The eldest lady member of the house or a newly married woman draws water from the well five times. Gold Bangles Ritual: Before bringing the water inside the house, the woman has to put her hand, worn with gold bangles (bhangra kankan), into the water in the pot—a ritual called 'bhangra kankan gallale haathu kalsanthu budoche'—and then fill the bhana with this water. Oil Bath (Thaila Snan): Following this, the children and ladies of the house apply oil over their body and head and take a hot water bath (Thaila Snan). Men of the family typically take their oil bath the next day, on the main Diwali day. In North Kanara, everyone performs the ritual oil bath at dawn on the main day. This oil bath is also known as 'Gangasnanam' and is a mandatory custom on Naraka Chaturdashi.
