Ingrown toenails can be very painful and can lead to infection. For recurrent or more severe cases of ingrown toenails a permanent solution is desired. One of the most effective ways of permanently treating ingrown toenails is by a procedure called a partial nail avulsion with phenolisation. A partial nail avulsion is where the full depth of the nail is cut back on one side under local anaesthesia. Phenolisation is a method of destroying part of the nail root with a chemical and preventing that section of nail regrowing, leaving the nail narrower and less likely to redevelop the problem.
