This lovely Yamaha DX-7 was shipped to me for a full restoration. After cleaning the keybed, cleaning the interior case, replacing the damaged graphics, and replacing the damaged cheek blocks I then installed a battery into the existing motherboard, however when the keyboard booted up it begin randomly flashing numbers and nothing would respond. After taking a temperature reading of all of the ic chips on the motherboard one ic chip was extremely hot, this can be an indicator that the ic has failed. After metering the ic I could see voltage coming in but not leaving confirming the ic had failed. Some ic’s such as the ones in a DX-7 are programmed by Yamaha meaning that you can not just drop in a general replacement, you must replace it with a programmed Yamaha chip, normally coming from another DX-7. Normally I will opt to replace the entire motherboard in this case because if I swap the chip from one DX-7 motherboard to another you can run the risk of damaging the chip or the board, leaving you with two none functioning boards and no chips, so I replace the entire board to minimize the chances of damaging them. After installing a new battery into the motherboard and installing the new motherboard this DX-7 was back up and running like it should! . . . . . . My voice: I get lots of comments asking why my voice sounds the way it dose, I have a medical condition called GERDS, this condition mainly affects my resting/speaking voice causing it to sound slightly raspy!
