‘Thrash’ is synonymous with the 1980s metal scene, but far less so with that of the 1990s. Thrash entered the decade on a roll but was quickly losing ground as death metal and then second wave black metal surpassed it in terms of extremity. Coupled with the rise of grunge diverting the attention and resources of big labels, and Thrash saw its popularity rapidly decline even during the first few years of the decade. But Thrash never completely died or went away. Veteran bands soldiered on, albeit in new, mutated forms, and some younger bands carried the torch for those acts who left the scene.
