With on-screen entertainment options continuing to grow in popularity and offerings, the tobacco industry continues to maintain its recurring and often starring role on-screen. Even as peer-reviewed research shows on-screen exposure to smoking images makes young people three times more likely to start vaping nicotine, Truth Initiative’s fifth annual “While You Were Streaming” report shows that 60 percent of the most popular shows among 15- to 24-year-olds contained depictions of tobacco in 2021, and on-screen tobacco use was also featured among nearly half of 2021’s top box office movies. This Truth Initiative Impact Series explores the issue of tobacco prevalence in popular entertainment and how content creators, showrunners, celebrities, and others in the entertainment industry can change the picture.
