Welcome to the first episode of The Papercast with me, Dominic Hill. In this series I will be talking about the scientific papers that have had the greatest impact on me and my work as a PhD student at the University of Reading. In the future, I hope to showcase the publications of my friends and colleagues here at the university and maybe, one day, talk to published individuals from further afield. In this episode I will be talking about the 1938 paper, "Crop production without soil", by W. F. Gericke. This paper, published in Nature, was the first to investigate the potential of the commercial application of "water culture", a laboratory technique that used water as the growing media to elucidate the function of specific nutrients in plant growth. The paper can be found at the following address: https://doi.org/10.1038/141536a0 Gericke's colleague at the University of California termed this method "hydroponics", coining a word that is now ubiquitous over 80 years later. This episode represents a work in progress, so constructive criticism is welcome. I am aware that this is not the traditional format of a podcast, but it's what I know, and I'm working on learning what I don't. I hope to have an audio version available soon, so stay tuned if you're interested. Thanks for watching, Dom
