Braun R1 receiver & Dual 620Q turntable

imgur gallery: https://imgur.com/gallery/braun-r1-re... I purchased it as "repairable," somewhat. At least the seller said he tried to fix it but gave up. The problem - the final STK integrated circuits were burned out. Once I opened the case - yes, both channels were gone. One channel still had the original integrated circuit, while the other had a replacement. I ordered other integrated circuits online, spent as much on them as I did on the entire receiver, and guess what? Total scam! I thought, I'll have to order some "new" audio STKs online. I had from dismantling a Siemens RS 555 (which was actually a Sanyo, and whose entire processor/logic section had died, but the audio amplifier was fine) the final audio board plus the two absolutely original integrated circuits, lovely pieces from their mother, Sanyo STK 086. Originally powered at about ±42 volts for 50 watts undistorted at 8 ohms. Luckily for me, the Braun receiver had a power supply of about ±37 volts, which is for 35 watts at 8 ohms. So, I thought, the STK 086 would work perfectly and even at the original power of the Braun receiver once transplanted. The entire procedure was complex, to say the least. First, I had to spend about a day understanding the audio stage diagram from the Siemens receiver, figuring out what needed to be cut, where to cut, and where to make connections to the Braun receiver. The audio outputs in the Siemens were on a long board that also included some relays and other components unrelated to the audio section once transplanted. I would have preferred to keep the entire board, but guess what? It wasn't possible. Here appeared the second major problem of the Braun receiver - space; everything is crammed in there (but still better made than the Beomaster 3000). So, I had to cut that board and keep only the essential components of the audio stage. In the end, there were two boards with amplifiers that I mounted on the original heatsink. I glued the boards with epoxy - it turns to stone and really withstands shocks and temperature. Once I made all the connections, double-checked, I was sweating bullets when I pressed the power button. But what a miracle, it worked... success, somewhat, because it sounded horrible, distorted, and with hum. The next day was spent experimenting with various resistor values to adjust the input level to the STK amplifiers from Siemens; I searched for where to connect the audio input for them, reduced the length of the cables as much as I could, redid the ground to be star-shaped—phew, painful but it worked, in the end, it was okay. The whole process, with studying diagrams and experimenting, took me about a week, with 8-10 hours of daily work (well, in a relaxed, hobby mode). One of the longest repairs I’ve done. Most electrolytic capacitors have been replaced as well. Next came a general cleaning and then reassembly. Then, of course, the listening test. What can I say... wow... I don't know how it sounded with the original STKs, but with the STK 086 amplifiers, it sounds absolutely superb. And the volume is more than enough to blow out the eardrums of any madman. I haven’t tested its maximum power on an oscilloscope for the simple reason that I don’t want to risk destroying the final integrated circuits. Especially since now they no longer have protection with relays at the output. I couldn’t adapt the original one from Siemens nor the one from Braun. The relays in Braun are connected; they switch, but they only analyze the input signal, not the output signal, as they should have. Yes, I tried, but it couldn’t be done any other way. At least as far as I could figure out. Plus, there’s the major problem of lack of space in the case. In the end, I glued a label on its back that says, under no circumstances should the output be short-circuited, as it will destroy the audio stage. One issue that remains - due to the removal of the original output stage, now the LEDs indicating clipping are like mini VU meters at low volume, and at higher volume, they stay completely lit. Well, it’s no big deal; it doesn’t affect me at all. The radio section works perfectly. Absolutely perfectly. It’s one of the most sensitive radios I have. It only competes with the Saba 9260 in terms of sensitivity. In Constanța, with a wire thrown out the window, I pick up stations from Bulgaria, clearly, in stereo. I also want to mention the quality of the phono preamp - it sounds best with my turntable, with the least background noise. I have a turntable with a weak signal, and on all devices with DIN connections, it hums more or less. On this Braun, it’s perfect; it’s as if they were made for each other (they even fit perfectly on top of each other).
