Re-Viewing Cotton Mary is an intervention into debates about Anglo-Indian representation. Rather than producing a conventional academic critique of Merchant-Ivory’s film, Cotton Mary, I documented the live responses of Anglo-Indians in Melbourne as they watch the film. The resulting work foregrounds affect—facial expressions, pauses, sighs, discomfort, and anger—capturing how stereotypes operate not only as discursive constructs but as lived, embodied provocations. The film functions as a “time capsule,” preserving the intensity of early-2000s debates around sexualised, Anglophile, and morally suspect Anglo-Indian figures. The film suggests that audience responses complicate scholarly attempts to adjudicate representations as simply accurate or inaccurate. Instead, the commentary positions the video as a counterpoint to academic discourse, revealing how stock images accrue emotional weight and cultural injury, and how community members negotiate visibility, shame, and resistance in real time.
