Zhenhai Tower was built at the start of the Ming dynasty in 1380 by Zhu Liangzi, a powerful member of the provincial nobility, to demonstrate his power to "shake the seas and the mountains". The tower was later incorporated into Guangzhou's city wall, becoming the northernmost watchtower. Now it stands alone in Yuexiu Park north of downtown Guangzhou, the city walls having been long since removed. The tower was rebuilt 1928 to house the Guangzhou City Museum. The tower is built in the Ming style, of course, and is painted red. The grounds around the tower hold some of the cannons used by the British during the Opium Wars when they seized the strategic high ground on which the tower stands. It also has two stone lions that were carved during the Ming dynasty and guard the entrance. 鎮海樓，又名望海樓，位於中國廣東省廣州越秀公園 小蟠龍岡上，為廣州市標誌性建築之一。全樓高25米，呈長方形，闊31米，深16米。下面兩層圍牆用紅砂岩條石砌造，三層以上為磚牆，外牆逐層收減，有復簷5層，綠琉璃瓦覆蓋，飾有石灣彩釉鰲魚花脊，朱紅牆綠瓦砌成，巍峨壯觀，被譽為“嶺南第一勝覽”。鎮海樓坐落在越秀山小蟠龍岡上。該樓又名 “望海樓”，因當時珠海河道甚寬，故將 “望江” 變為 “望海”。又因樓高5層，故又俗稱 “五層樓”。樓前碑廊有歷代碑刻，右側陳列有12門古砲。明朝洪武十三年（1380年），永嘉侯朱亮祖擴建廣州城時，把北城牆擴展到越秀山上，同時在山上修築了一座五層樓以壯觀瞻。鎮海樓歷史上曾五毀五建，現建築為鋼筋混凝土結構，是1928年重修時由木構架改建成。 1929年成為廣州市市立博物館。 1950年改名廣州博物館，分朝代陳列廣州城2000多年發展的文物史料。
