Virginia Humanities Fellow Donovan Schaefer Introduces the "False Image of History" Website

Donovan Schaefer, an associate professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania and a Virginia Humanities Fellow with the Library of Virginia in 2025, is researching a project titled Forging Feeling: Race, Emotion, and Confederate Commemoration in Virginia that blends archival research, public storytelling and a growing digital archive spotlighting Black press responses to Confederate symbols. During his research, Schaefer and his students built a database website, False Image of History, that highlights how Black journalists historically approached these commemorations. https://falseimage.pennds.org
