Many Catholic families are rightly cautious about allowing children to use the internet. The modern digital world presents real dangers, and responsible parents cannot ignore them. At the same time, fear that is undefined or misdirected can unintentionally limit a child’s education and preparation for adult life. In this talk, Prudence, Fear, and Catholic Education in a Digital Age, we examine the difference between genuine risks and groundless fears surrounding online education. The real danger of the internet does not lie in digital textbooks, online assignments, or academic platforms, but in unsupervised communication with strangers through chat rooms and social media. When internet use is guided, supervised, and ordered toward clear academic purposes, modern technology can serve Catholic education rather than undermine it. This presentation explains how responsible online study provides students with access to serious educational materials, structured academic programs, accurate grading, permanent academic records, and meaningful educational support—tools that are now integral to 21st-century life. Avoiding all technology does not necessarily protect children; in many cases, it may leave them unprepared for the world they must one day enter. The Classical Liberal Arts Academy approaches online education as a partnership with parents, grounded in supervision, discipline, and prudence. Technology is treated as a tool, not a substitute for parental authority or moral formation. This talk is intended for Catholic parents who want to think clearly, act prudently, and educate their children without fear, while remaining faithful to the responsibilities of Catholic formation.
