This bird belongs to the Vireonidae family which includes Vireos, Shrike-Babblers, and Erpornis. It is large for a Vireo at between 12 and 13 cm in length. It has greyish olive-green upperparts, a grey crown, a whitish supercilium, and of course a red iris. The supercilium is a stripe that runs from the base of a bird's beak above its eye and finishes somewhere toward the back of its head. Red-eyed Vireos are one of the most common breeding songbirds in the woodlands of North America, though they are more often heard than seen. Their range extends from Alaska and Canada, down through North America, into Central and South America. They are migratory birds that will winter in South America from around November until March. They will then fly north to Canada and Alaska where they will breed from around May through August. When breeding, Red-eyed Vireos prefer deciduous and mixed deciduous/coniferous forests. In the non-breeding season, they are less fussy though still prefer deciduous forests over conifers. They eat mostly insects and really enjoy caterpillar larvae. They also eat small fruits and are frugivorous during the winter months. Red-eyed vireos are flocking birds and can be found in large flocks of up to 30 birds. They are another amazing bird of the world.
