Mathew 26 focuses on the events leading up to Jesus' trial Read through the entire NT with me in one year with the link below • New Testament In A Year The Plot to Kill Jesus After Jesus finishes the parables, He tells His disciples that the Passover is in a couple of days and He's going to be delivered to be crucified. The scene shifts to priests gathered in the palace of the high priest, Caiaphas to plot the capture and murder of Christ Jesus enters Simon the Leper’s house. While the religious leaders are gathered in a palace plotting murder, Jesus is in a humble home ministering While Jesus is at Simon the Leper’s house a woman anoints Jesus with a very expensive oil. The disciples are upset They questioned her seemingly irrational action of waste – In the Gospel of Mark, we’re told this oil would be worth about the annual salary of a general laborer - $60,000 Their gripe is that they could have sold that oil and fed a bunch of poor people. After all, Jesus just got done teaching them the importance of ministering to the marginalized Jesus reacts by defending her and corrects the indignant disciples by pointing out that the poor will always be there for them to minister to but he would only be with them a couple more days This woman loves Jesus so much that she was willing to poor out this incredibly expensive oil on Him Jesus says that where ever the gospel is preached, her story would be told and He was right because here we are in 2026 talking about her act of love Finally, notice Judas’ response. – John 12:4-6 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[b] and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Judas prepares to betray Jesus Judas goes to the chief priests Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread (Passover) Jesus tells His disciples that one of them will betray Him. This makes them sad and they begin to ask Him which one of them it would be Jesus said, it’s the one who dipped his hand in the dish with Him Notice the wording of Judas’ question; Is it I, Rabbi? Judas never calls Jesus Lord, only Rabbi. Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper Notice the Lord’s Supper is “as they were eating” As protestants, we believe this bread and wine (grape juice in modern day) is a symbolic representation of Christ’s blood and body Catholics believe that, as you swallow the bread and grape juice, they literally become Christ’s body and blood. Jesus says he will not drink wine again until He drinks with us in His Kingdom. – When you take communion, not only should your meditate on His sacrifice and the brutality of it for our sakes, but we should also look forward to the day when we have this meal with Jesus in person. Jesus foretells of Peter’s Denial It seems they ended their evening celebration, Likely early in the morning by singing a hymn. They leave that upper room and head to the Mount of Olives where Jesus tells them they will all scatter once He’s taken into custody. Peter says, “maybe they will but I would never!!!” Jesus tells Peter, before the rooster crows, you will have denied me 3 times. Jesus takes His disciples to Gethsemane where he has all of them wait except His 3, James, Peter and John He asks these three men to pray with Him but from a slight distance. Jesus goes off a few paces and prays to God the Father where he asks for this cup, crucifixion, to pass from Him but ultimately submits to the Father’s will. Jesus comes back to them only to find them asleep. It seems he’d been praying for about an hour He keeps going off to pray and coming back to find them asleep So, He tells them to get up and rest later because Judas is getting close Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus As Jesus was telling them to get up and rest later, Judas approaches with an armed crowd (different crowd than the ones shouting Hosanna) and the chief priests and elders Judas Kisses Jesus Jesus does not resist but Peter does. He cuts off the ear of the High Priest’s servant. His name isn’t mentioned in the synoptic gospels but John tells us his name was Malchus Luke tells us that Jesus reattached Malchus‘s ear Then, just as Jesus had told them, the disciples all fled and scattered. Jesus before Caiaphus and the Council So, they lead Jesus to Caiaphus the high priest joined by scribes and elders. Peter was following at a distance until he reached the courtyard This is where Peter denies Jesus 3 times and the rooster crows Peter leaves the courtyard and balls his eyes out because of what he’s just done. #Matthew #Bible #Jesus #Love #ReadyOrNot #KingJesus #Kingdom #MidnightCry #Rapture #Salvation #Temple #Tribulation #Commandment #Parable #Destroyed #Hell #Heaven #Flask #ointment
