The conversation explores Indigenous homelessness, the complexity of home, housing insecurity in the Arctic North and the possibilities of recreating community and connection. Dr. Julia Christensen draws upon her years of research in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Greenland, and Alaska to describe the impacts of colonialism on land dispossession and loss of sovereignty, cultural imposition and resistance, and dependency and stigmatization. Impacts of neoliberal restructurings promoting market based housing and the impacts of cuts to government programs are discussed. The conversation delves into the challenges of housing monopolies in Northern communities, market monopolization and housing inefficiencies, bureaucratic colonialism and housing governance, Indigenous self-determination and housing, the power of storytelling in research, humanity and emotional security, and government policies and homelessness prevention. Indigenous homelessness in the Canadian North is a complex issue with deep-rooted historical and cultural implications.#homelessness #inequality #settlercolonialism #northwestterritories #canada #indigenouscultures
