Creating the pop-up card for my Phoenix of the Gilded Garden collection turned into a fascinating trial-and-error process. After studying a number of instructional videos, I learned the fundamentals of pop-up mechanics from The Pop-Up Channel (@thepop-upchannel4919). Once I understood the basics, the challenge became figuring out how to make my own artwork function in a pop-up format. You’ll see the printed artwork, the templates I created to repeat the process consistently, and the simple tools needed to bring the card to life. Tools used: • Multi-purpose craft glue • Scissors • X-Acto knife • Ruler • Scoring tool • Pencil • Scrap paper I also demonstrate the cutting techniques used during the build, and how templates help align the pieces precisely so the mechanics function properly. At the heart of the card’s movement are V-folds, a classic pop-up structure that allows the artwork to rise dramatically when the card opens. Along the way I highlight something I learned quickly: glue control matters. Small details in assembly make a big difference in how clean and professional the finished piece looks. To finish the card, I added a little extra presentation magic with a glitter shimmer spray—because a phoenix deserves a bit of glow. This project was a fun way to explore the intersection of illustration, paper engineering, and design. If you're curious about pop-up mechanics, paper craft, or simply want a behind-the-scenes look at how artwork can be transformed into something dimensional, I hope you enjoy the process. #popupcard #papercraft #paperengineering #popupdesign #phoenixart #artprocess #artiststudio #behindthescenesart #handmadecard #creativeprocess #illustrationprocess #surfacepattern #surfacepatterndesigner ______________ Licensing Library & Design Blog: www.lightelementalsllc.net Stay connected.
