Help! which piano should I get?

Here I answer a couple of emails from subscribers about which pianos they should get. Here's a brief summary of the information in this email - I find with digital pianos, just like most things, you pay for what you get. And as my grandmother used to say - if you buy cheap, you pay dear” Long ago I learned the hard way that if you buy a cheap keyboard and it breaks, you will have to buy a new one because either the broken parts are beyond repair since they are of such low quality, or the cost of repairing is greater than the cost of the piano itself. Your fingers and hands have become accustomed to the feel of the cheap keyboard - probably not weighted keys, or very badly weighted, sticky action..then you get to your teacher’s piano and it’s like night and day and you can’t use the same finger pressure or technique on a good piano, since it doesn’t work. And it’s all about how much you want it. I remember to this day when I bought my first Yamaha digital piano - it was very expensive at the time. I think about 2 thousand pounds..I saved and saved for it working multiple jobs and when I paid cash for it it was the best feeling ever! You can’t be cheap with keyboards - they will break, and you will learn incorrect technique especially with regard to pressure on the keys and fluidity. Then you need to put more hours in correcting the damage. Look for a used piano - you can get em for free on Craigslist or for very cheap. Moving them is expensive but like i said it all depends on how much you want it. Pianos are big and loud. When I was renting a room in London before I moved to the States, I had a room with a bed and a piano and that was it. I bought the piano in London, and then there was something wrong with it so I had to get a new one. It was invaluable having that acoustic piano to practice on regularly. In general, acoustic is better. Don’t go cheap! There is an exception to this rule where people may have a great piano that they want to give away because they are tired of it and don’t want the hassle of dealing with it anymore. In this case, you may be taking a risk since pianos are expensive to move. Get it appraised by a professional. Of course, if you do this and the owners are told it’s true worth, they will most probably ask you for more money to take it off their hands.
