Motorists should understand that cyclists also have the same right to use the roads and should be treated equally as other road users. Motorists should also take note of the limitations of a bicycle, such as it being smaller in size and not so visible, and that it may be affected by cross-wind or high-speed vehicles. It is always a wise move to keep a safe distance from cyclists. Some cyclists can ride as fast as a vehicle. Motorists should never underestimate them. Pass them only under safe conditions and keep a distance of at least one metre between the vehicle and the bicycle. Gusts of wind incurred during passing may put cyclists in danger. To play safe, give way to cyclists at a left turn if they are nearby. Drivers of large vehicles should be extra cautious as there may be cyclists riding in the blind spots near, behind or even in front of the vehicle. When you are preparing to turn, pass or drive into a lane, take a look at the rear-view mirror and signal clearly. When stopping, drivers should remind passengers to check the traffic before opening doors, just in case there are cyclists approaching. Remember, safety always comes first.
