Published on Sep 21, 2015 The Hmong in Minneapolis (affectionately referred to as “HMinneapolis”) A Ward 5 Production/Short Documentary Directed by Samantha Vang, 5th Ward Intern (2015) As Council Member Yang continued to get asked about the history of the Hmong in Minneapolis, he had a hard time finding out more about the history of the Hmong in Minneapolis. So, instead of giving an account of the history of the Hmong in St. Paul (which is the dominant narrative), he asked his office to research the history of the Hmong in Minneapolis. Ge Vang and his family were one of the first three Hmong families to move to the City of Minneapolis in 1979. They lived in one of the units of 239 Irving Avenue N, which is located in North Minneapolis (Ward 5). In the subsequent years, thousands of Hmong have called Minneapolis home and have been making history in Minneapolis. In 2013, Ward 5 elected the first Hmong city council member in Minneapolis history. In some ways, things have come full circle. Council Member Blong Yang hosted the "HMinneapolis Forum" on Thursday, September 3rd, 2015, at the Capri Theater. Over 100 people got the chance to see this short documentary on a huge screen and they were mesmerized (at least that’s what we told ourselves). Remember this as you criticize the video: this was a very low-budget, short documentary that was produced in about ten weeks by our summer intern. If there are any errors, we are sorry. If there are glaring historical errors, please let us know immediately.
