Periphyton: The ignored Primary Producer you really need to include in your Ecosystem.

"Periphyton cultured on drift wood is a rich food source ready to enter the food web at the bottom level and work it's way up through the food chain. This will increase overall energy, complexity and diversity of your ecosystem which equates to increased potential and therefore, an increase in your ecosystem's resilience. Cultured Periphyton on driftwood and including it at the start of your ecosystem's life would result in faster maturation of your ecosystem. After we put down our tools and finish making our ecosystem, it is immediately off balance, not efficient, unsustainable, the flow of nutrients, carbon, biomass, CO2, O2, light levels and intensity, population and food demand etc etc are not correct. Our ecosystem is in a developmental stage. Periphyton speeds up this developmental stage which takes around 30 days. It's called ecological succession and it's a time where your ecosystem will self-organize and self-balance itself. It can't correct a problem if it's really bad but you'd be surprised. If it survives, the ecosystem will enter into a steady-state and many aspects of it's functioning, responses, and organization will be very different then how it was in it's developmental stage. It might as well be a different ecosystem. To get back on topic...By adding cultured periphyton to your closed/open aquatic ecosystem you will achieve that more balanced state quicker. Indeed, you will also maintain it easier. As an added benefit a heavier than average dose of Phosphorus would be beneficial to the periphyton and whole ecosystem. I usually dose my ecosystems with 4ppm PO4 when they are sealed. I dosed high because most of it is instantly bound to Mg or Fe when you add it and made inaccessible for plants to use. Lame. Dosing P will give you positive results beyond this too. Like increased periphyton, phytoplankton, and zooplankton populations as well as better soil decomposition and nitrogen fixation. Phosphorus affects all macro nutrient cycling in your ecosystem too, and is one of the biggest factors in phytoplankton, bacterial, algae and zooplankton populations. P is the annoying nutrient, most cycle in a simple way, like N. P has I believe four ways it could cycle or transform. Depending on how it's feeling that day. The increased zooplankton population as a result of dosing heavy on P will actually make P cycling more efficient so that's cool. I believe it's because they just poop out a ton of P, it could be for another reason. But poopin' the P is definitely a thing they do well. In conclusion, dose high on Phosphorus. If you dose lightly, that's a break in your ecosystem before it even started, and clearly a big mistake. Periphyton good." _______________ EcoAmateur, AggressiveEagle TheLifeJar.com _______________ "grazing did not decrease benthic primary production in Greenland; on the contrary, the periphyton productivity was highest in these oligotrophic lakes where the densities of large benthic grazers were also highest." -Benthic and pelagic food resources for zooplankton in shallow high-latitude lakes and ponds ". From our results it can be confirined, that the biological analysis nf the periphyton renders rapid and reliable result R dealing with the process of longit iidinal succession of the biological selfpurificatioin. " - Periphyton in a Stabilization System "Periphyton communities have received relatively little attention in lake ecosystems. However, evidence is increasing that they play a key role in primary productivity, nutrient cycling, and food web interactions. " - Periphyton Function in Lake Ecosystems
