I'm Stewart and I've decided to walk the West Highland Way. Only I've never walked any great distance before. So I've split the route into discreet stages and walking them one at a time as day trips. This is stage 2, starting at the Beech Tree Inn on the A81 at Dumgoyne, and walking through Killearn, Gartness, Drymen, the Garadbhan Forest and stopping near Milton of Buchanan just short of Conic Hill, where I turn around and walk all the way back! Along the way I learn about the railways that used to criss cross the land and now make excellent walking and cycling routes. They are the Campsie extension to the Edinburgh and Glasgow railway, the Blane Valley Railway, the Strathendrick and Aberfoyle railway and the Forth and Clyde Junction railway. I also discovered that some of the drinking water to Glasgow doesn't just come from Loch Katrine... I parked my car at a layby on the A81 near Dumgoyne, alternatives are the train to Balloch and then using local buses to Drymen. I found that this section of the West Highland Way was very accessible for all abilities of walkers including children, prams, bicycles. The terrain was easy going and I managed 17.5 miles with only a few aches.
