Moved to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) Africa. Settled in London (1949) Genres of Novel, short story, biography, drama, libretto and poetry The oldest person ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 88 years Today’s story has been taken from her short story collection African Stories (1981) ********************************** Bried summary of the short story A MILD ATTACK OF LOCUSTS ********************************** 1- "A Mild Attack of Locusts" is set on a farm in what may be presumed to be Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) Africa. 2- The protagonist, Margaret, lives with Richard, her husband, and Stephen, her father-in-law. 3- She observes the worst attack of locusts from the direction of the mountains. Everybody comes out shouting. 4- They try to make noise with metal and cans. They build fires and throw wet leaves upon them to create more smoke. 5- The locusts destroy grass, leaves and maize but the farmers are still struggling to keep them stay and lay eggs in the land 6- Locusts stand as a metaphor for the power of nature and the people’s belief in the healing power of nature. ************************ SHORT QUESTIONS ************************ i. What are locusts? Locusts are large insects. They fly in huge swarms. They eat up all green things like grass, maize, leaves of trees etc. within a very small span of time. they are very dangerous. ii. Why did the farmers throw wet leaves on the fire? The farmers threw wet leaves on the fire to make the smoke acrid and black. They wanted to produce a lot of smoke to keep the locusts from settling and laying eggs in their farms. iii. What was the desire of every farmer? Every farmer hoped that the locusts would overlook his farm and go on to the next. iv. Did Margaret know what to do to keep the locusts away? No, Margaret did not know what to do to keep the locusts away. She had never seen such horrible attack of locusts in her life before. She was wondering what she could do to help. She felt helpless and disturbed that she could do nothing to avoid the attack. v. What was the condition of the trees? All the trees were completely clotted with locusts. They looked very queer and still. Their branches weighed down to the ground. Even a tree down the slope leaned over and settled heavily to the ground vi. How did old Stephen treat the stray locust which he found on his shirt? Old Stephen picked the stray locust off his shirt and split it down with his thumbnail. He was surprised to see that its belly was full of eggs. vii. Are the hoppers different from locusts? No, the hoppers are not different from locusts. Actually, they are the young ones of the locusts. So, they are identical to each other and they are as dangerous as the locusts. viii. Did Margaret lose heart on the loss of crops? Yes, Margaret lost her heart on the loss of crops. She had never seen such a horrible attack of locusts in her life before. She thought that such devastated and mangled countryside was a ruin. ix. Why are the locusts compared with bad weather? The locusts are compared to bad weather because bad weather creates havoc and destruction. In the same way, locusts also bring about the destruction of crops and trees. So, they are as dangerous and bad as bad weather. x. Why did the men eat their supper with good appetites? Men ate their supper with good appetites because they were satisfied with their efforts to keep the locusts from settling in their farms.
