About Malvika Raj For Malvika, being Dalit has always been part of her identity and it reflects in her art. Malvika's art captures Dr. Ambedkar's life and revolutionary spirit as well as Buddha's spiritual journey. She uses traditional Madhubani art form to narrate the life stories of Buddha and Dr. Ambedkar, icons that have inspired her. Traditionally Hindu mythology and portrayals of Hindu deities dominated the drawings of Madhubani art form. However, Malvika's art transforms this art form by including the icons that she and millions of Dalits revere. In India, where art is dominated by upper caste narrative, Malvika’s art is a reminder of the existence of a Dalit narrative. About Dalit History Month In India structural and social inequalities sustained by 'caste system' have relegated millions of Dalits (formerly “Untouchables”) as inferior human beings who face institutionalized social, economic and political ostracization. Despite this, Dalits have asserted and organized themselves as a politically conscientious community. April is celebrated as Dalit History Month in honor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar - dedicated human rights activist and founding the father of modern India. Dr. Ambedkar ignited the Dalit assertion and conscientization movement in early 20th century. Today, this Dalit movement is reaching out globally to forge solidarities with movements of the oppressed across the world. For more info: https://www.tiki-toki.com/timeline/en...
