Erato Ensemble - Soliloquy No. 1 (Eugene Castillo)

Soliloquy No. 1 (from Love's Labour's Lost) Music by Eugene Castillo Words by William Shakespeare William George, tenor Christine Lin, violin Michael Park, piano Donald Adams, reader Ferdinand’s Soliloquy (Love’s Labour’s Lost) So sweet a kiss the golden sun gives not To those fresh morning drops upon the rose, As thy eye-beams, when their fresh rays have smote The night of dew that on my cheeks down flows: Nor shines the silver moon one half so bright Through the transparent bosom of the deep, As doth thy face through tears of mine give light; Thou shinest in every tear that I do weep: No drop but as a coach doth carry thee; So ridest thou triumphing in my woe. Do but behold the tears that swell in me, And they thy glory through my grief will show: But do not love thyself; then thou wilt keep My tears for glasses, and still make me weep. O queen of queens! how far dost thou excel, No thought can think, nor tongue of mortal tell. Composer’s Note: Written nearly a decade apart, each sonnet depicts very different versions of an “ode to love” after a very vigorous debate three male characters had in Shakespeare’s early and seldom performed comedy. The King and his lords had taken a vow to forswear the company of women, but when the Princess arrives for official business with her court, things begin to go awry. First the King, then his other two lords give an ode to love, having forgotten their oath. The first soliloquy depicts the bittersweet pain of love through the use of dissonant intervals made to sound “sweet” and featuring the recurring use of the rising interval of a 9th. Longaville’s soliloquy contrasts that of his king with the falling interval of a 7th in both the piano accompaniment and the solo violin. The point of comedy is the tragedy that no longer seems to carry its sting. An American conductor and composer praised for his persuasion, passion and eloquence on the podium, Eugene Castillo is well- known for his diverse and innovative programming. He has been Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, and Music Director and Conductor of the Camellia Symphony Orchestra in Sacramento, California. He is the recipient of four First Place awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) for innovative and adventuresome programming. In 2001 he made his conducting début with the National Symphony at Kennedy Center. Mr. Castillo has also guest conducted orchestras in the United States, Ukraine, Mexico, Spain, and Thailand.
