(14380) 5 credits; Thursdays, 9:40PM-2:10PM, A-term; online plus work-on-your-own (synchronous, remote learning) If you are looking for an A-term course for this summer, consider this one! Production of recreational/medicinal cannabis and industrial hemp is increasing as States and the federal government loosen restrictions and develop new policies. Local expansion of cannabis-related industry has already impacted the economy of Washington State and may have social and environmental implications as well. This course will explore production methods, supply chains, consumer markets, and policy and regulation with people, planet, and profit in mind. Why cannabis? It should be recognized that cannabis is both like and unlike other cultivated crops. Environmental, economic, and social concerns, such as issues with large-scale monocultures, land/water use, pest-management, policy and regulation, and tensions among user groups are common themes in agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, etc. However, cannabis is unique because of its complicated legal status, diversity of growing types (indoors, outdoors, hybrid, and hydroponic) and its diverse use as food and fiber (hemp), medicine, and a recreational substance. https://myplan.uw.edu/course/#/course...
