Also known as Marzanna in the Slavic countries and Marzena PolandDreaming Goddess of Malta -- she is known as the Lady of winter and death, rebirth of nature, dreams. Mara/Marzanna is usually depicted as a Crone goddess, representing the dying days of winter. Celebrated on the Spring Equinox on March 21, she is honored in a procession consisting of men, women and children who carry handmade Marzanna dolls, to the nearest river, lake or pond. The participants sing traditional songs and throw effigies of Marzanna into the water. Sometimes the effigies are first set on fire, or their clothes are torn. Then, they make their way back to the village carrying small trees or bushes, called copses, adorned with ribbons and blown egg shells. You can call on Mara when you want to release what has gotten stagnant in your mind, body or spirit over the winter months, in order to plant seeds of possibility and new intentions for the Spring-tide Qualities associated with Mara – letting go, deep-soul diving, rebirth, nature-connection The chant I shared is a lovely one to honor that letting go process and celebrate the cycles of life and nature: It’s the blood of the ancients that flows through our veins.
