These are the beautifully varied flavors and forms of the more winter hardy Psidium species that can be grown in Europe as a potted fruit tree. In my quest to find new possible fruits for the European climate I started growing some Araças in 2012. At the time Psidium cattleianum was the only species I was able to get, evn from international vendors on the internet. In the years since I was surprised by the variability in the quality and size of the different seeds that I got at the time, and in the mean time a lot of newly discovered species of Psidium also became available. I have tried to grow quite a few of these newly discovered species as well, but unfortunately, none of those have proven as hardy to our local winters as Psidium cattleianum. It seems to me that that is the hardiest species among all the guavas. Even Psidium cattleianum is not hardy enough to survive the winters here, when planted in the ground and left to the elements. The plants canonly survive temperatures of -5 Celsius, even some nights of -6 Celsius, but not more than that. They have survived all winters in my unheated greenhouse, where the minimum temperature reaches just - 6 Celsius at night, even when it freezes -12 Celsius outside. These hard limits make it impossible to develop this otherwise delicious fruit any further for commercial production in Europe. For gardeners and collectors this is however a beautiful and interesting plant to grow, that gives a spectacular crop of brightly colored tropical flavored fruits around Christmas time, when grown in a pot as a patio-plant. You can grow it most of the year outside and move the tree indoors, in a sunroom or inside an unheated greenhouse for the winter months. There you can have the fruit ripen, and pick it off the tree to use in cocktails or desserts right in front of your guests and friends. Quite spectacular!
